Transfer news: Jermain Defoe is key to Spurs chief’s plans
Andre Villas-Boas has calmed fears that Jermaine Defoe could leave Tottenham by revealing early talks with the striker have been positive.
The marksman scored the winner for England last night against Italy after he expressed concerns that another season spent warming the Spurs bench could force him to leave.
While Villas-Boas admitted he is still in the market for a new goalscorer, he has revealed Defoe is key to his plans this season
“I have spoken to Jermain and his agent about the situation. The talks were positive.
“Obviously we are looking for one more striker because we need one.
“Jermain scored 18 goals last year. He was a key player and will continue to be. That’s the expectancy I have with regards to his future.
“Competition is something that he is used to. The goal that he scored yesterday shows he can make the difference.
“He is tremendous. It was a great goal, he has great technical ability.”
With the Premier League title already in Manchester United’s hands and the relegation issues also decided, the battle for European football is the only unanswered question ahead of Sunday’s final round of games.
