England will take on Italy next week without John Terry

Roy Hodgson has left Chelsea defender John Terry out of the England squad to face Italy in Berne on Wednesday, the Football Association have confirmed.

The Three Lions coach has made wholesale changes to his squad for the friendly match, which has seen the defender’s Blues team-mate Ashley Cole left out along with national captain Steven Gerrard and striker Wayne Rooney.

The selection is good news for other players as Chelsea youngsters Ryan Bertrand and Daniel Sturridge make the squad after their exploits with the Great Britain side in the Olympic Games, while midfielder Frank Lampard returns to the fold after missing Euro 2012 through injury.

Gary Cahill is the fifth Blues star named in the squad, while Tottenham and Arsenal are also represented.

Spurs duo Steven Caulker and Jake Livermore who have been called up for the first time, joined by striker Jermain Defoe and defender Kyle Walker.

Alex Oxlaide-Chamberlain and Theo Walcott ensure that the Gunners are represented.

The Squad: Goalkeepers: Jack Butland (Birmingham City), Joe Hart (Manchester City), John Ruddy (Norwich City).

Defenders: Leighton Baines (Everton), Ryan Bertrand (Chelsea), Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Steven Caulker(Tottenham Hotspur), Phil Jagielka (Everton), Kyle Walker (Tottenham Hotspur).

Midfielders: Michael Carrick (Manchester United), Tom Cleverley (Manchester United), Frank Lampard(Chelsea), Adam Johnson (Manchester City), Jake Livermore (Tottenham Hotspur), James Milner (Manchester City), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal), Jack Rodwell (Everton), Ashley Young (Manchester United).

Forwards: Andy Carroll (Liverpool), Jermain Defoe (Tottenham Hotspur), Daniel Sturridge (Chelsea), Theo Walcott (Arsenal).
