Former Tottenham and Arsenal defender Sol Campbell has retired from football.

The 37-year-old has been without a club since May 2011 and has decided to call time on his career.

Campbell started his career with Spurs and made over 250 league appearances, scoring 10 times.

But in 2001 he controversially moved to Arsenal on a free transfer, much to the fury of Lilywhites fans.

During his first spell Arsenal he made 135 league appearances, scoring eight times and he was part of Arsenal’s famous ‘Invincibles’ as they went the entire season unbeaten.

Campbell moved to Portsmouth in 2006, winning the FA Cup in 2008 before joining Sven Goran Erikkson’s Notts County revolution.

But he left after only one appearance (a 1-0 defeat to Morecambe) as the Magpies newfound wealth turned out to be a smoke and mirrors job.

Campbell returned to Arsenal in 2010 and made 11 more league appearances before moving to Newcastle.

However, after seven appearances he was released in May 2011 and he failed to find a club, leading to his retirement.
