Vinny Mitchell is building up to his first fight since 2010

Super-featherweight Vinny Mitchell, younger brother of Kevin, has returned to training and is looking to return to action after a two-year break in his career, which saw him record 12 wins in 13 pro appearances.

The 25-year-old last fought in May 2010 on the undercard of his brother Kevin’s clash with Aussie Michael Katsidis, his lone pro defeat at West Ham United’s Upton Park ground, when the younger Mitchell clearly defeated Daniel Thorpe over four rounds.

He admits now he should not have taken the one fight he lost, against Jon Baguley in February 2010 when he was stopped in four rounds.

“I was very ill about three days before, but there was no way I was going to pull out of the show,” he said.

“Three months later I fought against Daniel Thorpe at West Ham and won every round. So I didn’t stop because I was on a losing streak.”

He has been back in the gym several times, but insists he is now staying fully-focused on his career.

“Now I am back in full training with Mark Tibbs and letting everybody know that I am ready,” added Mitchell, who recently celebrated the birth of his daughter.

“It’s given me motivation to crack on again. It’s not just for her, but it’s the fact that the style of life that comes with having a child has turned me into a family man.”

Vinny takes inspiration from his brother Kevin, who faces Ricky Burns for the WBO lighweight title in September.

“The way he picked himself up is a big inspiration and is an example that it can be done,” he said.

“I’m lucky that I have him to look up to – he’s my idol,” he said.

“I have a lot of respect for Ricky Burns.

“I think he’s achieved what he has so far through hard work and dedication.

“My brother has the added bonus of a lot of skill and my opinion is that he will beat Burns between rounds 9-12 with a stoppage.

“Kevin will need to be 110 per cent for this fight though because Burns will be in the shape of his life. If it goes to points, Burns could be in with a chance to win.”

But Vinny is confident that Kevin has the power to cause Burns serious problems.

“Against say Carl Johanneson and Alex Arthur, Burns was dropped a couple of times by people who can punch hard. My brother has only lost one fight in 34 and has 24 KO’s,” he warned.

“I just think his skill and devastating punch power will be too much for Burns.

“Look at the way he broke through John Murray’s guard.”
