Carrying the Paralympic Flame through the streets of Harrow in the early hours of the morning was all in a day’s work for Tottenham volunteer Berkeley Gardner.
By lunchtime, Mr Gardner –chosen to carry the torch because of his 27 years working in youth services – was back in Tottenham, doing what he does best: working with young people.
Indeed, the 61-year-old had been cheered along his route by some of the kids he had been working with at Notting Hill Carnival just two days before, who had come out to see him.
“It was fantastic,” Mr Gardner enthused. “I was the first to go in my group. The ladies I was with were characters. They decided who should go first.”
A giant rat is not something you generally expect to find beneath your dishwasher.
