Ugandan marathon runner Stephen Kiprotich – who won his country’s second-ever gold medal on Sunday – was spotted on the High Road on Monday afternoon. It is thought Kiprotich was with some of his fellow countrymen, keen to celebrate the 23-year-old’s success.

He was the second Olympian spotted in the High Road, after Ghana’s Sulemana Tetteh took time out of his schedule for London 2012 to pop into Sainsbury’s, even stopping to have his photo taken with thrilled staff and customers.

The light flyweight boxer, 19, missed out on a medal, going out in the first round, but his defeat hasn’t dulled the sense of excitement for Sainsbury’s staff.

Their HR manager Saira Shah said: “It was an honour to serve an Olympian in our store.”
