Cllr David Browne revealed his plans for the next year at the official Mayor-making ceremony at Tottenham Town Hall, attended by the borough’s councillors as well as his own family and friends.

Cllr Browne – who represents St Ann’s ward – takes over the role from Cllr Gina Adamou.

Addressing crowds at the historic building in Town Hall Approach Road, Cllr Browne said: “I would sum up the role of Mayor in three words ‘encourage’, ‘congratulate’ and ‘celebrate’.

“This is a fabulous opportunity to raise the borough’s profile and build its reputation.”

Looking ahead to his time in office, which began officially on May 22, Cllr Browne revealed his nominated charity will be Action for Kids, as well as his interest in the creative arts.

He said: “There is Ally Pally, Jacksons Lane, the Bernie Grant Arts Centre, Mountview Academy, the Chocolate Factory – this list could go on.

“Haringey has such a lot to be proud of and I will be doing everything I can to talk up the borough: talking up this borough is not difficult to do.”

The event was also a chance to praise Cllr Adamou’s work as Mayor. She was congratulated by council leader Cllr Claire Kober for attending more than 150 engagements during her tenure.

Cllr Adamou thanked “the people of Haringey” for their support during her mayoralty, adding: “I have been treated with love and respect and have been welcome everywhere I have visited.”

Cllr Sheila Peacock will be deputy mayor.
