An up-and-coming Muswell Hill band have much to live up to in matching the achievements of their former school’s musical alumni.
Velvet Stream have been attracting attention for their “mind-blowing” fusion of pristine vocals and entrancing music since the former Fortismere students got together. They played a recent gig at The Queen’s of Hoxton’s This Must Be Pop night.
The five-piece went to the same school as Razorlight’s Johnny Borrell, The Kinks and Michael Kiwanuka – though lead vocalist Mati, 22, doesn’t seem too worried by the comparisons.
“We feel really lucky to have come from a school with a lot of musical heritage,” she said.
Completed by drummer Anthony Lewis, Freddy de Lord on piano, guitarist Isaac Lee-Kronick and Dan Holloway on bass, the band are influenced by artists such as Bob Marley and Patti Smith.
Mati said: “We want to make people happy and to make them feel good about themselves.”
