Home-made xylophone among artifacts in Pink Floyd house

»One lucky bidder may not just end up with the Highgate house where Pink Floyd was formed; they could end up with a homemade xylophone which may have helped the legendary musicians create their hits.

The ramshackle instrument and other musical paraphernalia were discovered in the loft of the semi-detached house in Stanhope Gardens. It and the adjoining property will be auctioned by Savills on September 20.

Both homes were owned by the band’s former tutor Mike Leonard until his death this year, and each carry a guide price of £1.2 million.

Three of the five original members – guitarist Syd Barrett, bassist Roger Waters and drummer Nick Mason –lived at the address at various points during the band’s formative years in the mid-60s, and the house remains largely unaltered from its heady heyday.

Chris Coleman-Smith, director of auctions at Savills, said: “It’s easy to imagine them strumming their guitars and talking about music, both houses retain a very bohemian feel.”

He added that there was keen interest in the property which was first advertised in their catalogue last week.

The internationally renowned psychedelic rockers produced music for three decades until the 1990s, including Brick in the Wall and Dark Side of the Moon.
