An ice cream seller from Tottenham had to be airlifted to hospital last week after being attacked on an Essex beach.
The 29-year-old, believed to be of Turkish descent, was found with head, arm and leg injuries near to Grays beach, in Grays, last Wednesday afternoon.
He was reportedly hit with an axe which almost severed his arm in full view of a seafront packed with people enjoying one of the hottest days of the year.
Police also discovered the vendor’s ice cream van had been damaged.
Two men and a woman were arrested following the incident and Danny Trigg, 23, of South Ockendon, Essex, has been charged with various offences relating to the assault.
He appeared at Southend Magistrates’ Court last Friday charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent, assault by beating and causing criminal damage.
The victim’s condition has since been described as stable.
A 48-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman, both from Great Warley, were bailed until September 14 pending further enquiries.
Trigg was remanded in custody and will appear again at Basildon Crown Court on November 6.
