Neighbourhoods across Highgate have been shaken by a string of “brazen” burglaries carried out by suspects in crash helmets, using mopeds and motorbikes to smash their way into properties and make a quick getaway.

A Highgate resident, who did not wish to be named, said that in January two men smashed the door to her home “in two” with a motorbike while she was at work, before raiding the property and making off with jewellery and a laptop.

She said: “The builder [working over the road] said he heard a big thump and he came out and saw a motorbike and two guys. One was throwing stuff out of the window and the other was catching it.

“It felt very brazen and cheeky – there were guys working opposite, the alarm was ringing and they didn’t run off. They clearly thought they had time before anyone got back.”

A resident in Holmesdale Road, who also did not wish to be named, said her neighbours were “very anxious” after three burglaries and numerous attempted burglaries along the road over the last few weeks.

She said a number of her neighbours had seen suspicious individuals on mopeds, with their licence plates obscured, in the area and the same people in helmets snooping around residents’ gardens and attempting to break into front windows.

Police have also been called to attempted burglaries involving suspects on mopeds in Hillside Gardens and North Grove.

Residents have been advised by the Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) to call police immediately if they see anyone on a moped acting suspiciously.

However, Cllr Rachel Allison has complained that police have told residents they will only respond in the event of a crime taking place.

She said: “Residents need to be reassured that the police are taking this very seriously and backing up the advice from the SNT.”

A police spokeswoman urged residents are “vigilant” and “keep an eye out for their neighbours”.

No arrests have been made so far.
