A-level results: Haringey students’ success pulls borough above national average

This year’s A-level students brought in another clutch of good results today - dragging Haringey’s pass rate above the national average for the first time ever.

Haringey A*-C pass rates year-on-year

Alexandra Park = 79% (+2%)

Fortismere = 88% (-)

Greig City Academy = 70% (+2%)

Haringey Sixth Form Centre = 83% (+26%)

Highgate Wood = 78% (-)

Hornsey School For Girls = 72% (+12%)

St Thomas More = 76% (+16%)

Haringey = 80% (+5.7%)

National = 76% (-0.2%)

Provisional figures reveal that 80 per cent of exams taken in Haringey were graded A*-C, a rise of 5.7pc on last year. This just exceeds the national average, which dropped 0.2pc this year.

Haringey Sixth Form Centre led the charge with another huge leap in the number of ‘good’ A-level grades to 83pc of all courses taken - a 26pc increase on last year.

St Thomas More School’s results by this benchmark also increased by 16pc to 76pc.

The Sixth Form Centre submitted revised results this morning (Friday) which turned the results table on its head, leaving schools in the west of the borough taking the bottom two places on the league table.

The college is now second only to Fortimere school in the results table going by the ‘good’ grades benchmark.

While Hornsey School For Girls saw its ‘good’ results improve by 12pc to 72pc, other schools’ improved too and it sits second from bottom this year, the same position it occupied in 2011.

Greig City Academy, also in Hornsey, improved the proportion of ‘good’ grades by 2pc to 70pc, but this wasn’t enough to stop it sliding from 2011’s mid-table position to the bottom.

Fortismere in Muswell Hill kept its position at the top of the tree, maintaining the same 88pc ‘good’ pass rate, but it is now just 5pm ahead of the competition.

Alexandra Park School’s ‘good’ grades improved by 2pc this year, nudging Highgate Wood School into fourth place.

There are plenty of students heading to Oxbridge, too; nine from Fortismere, one each from Greig City Academy and Haringey Sixth Form Centre, and at least one from Alexandra Park School.

Cllr Ann Waters, cabinet member for children, who visited Fortismere and Haringey Sixth Form Centre, said: “It was a pleasure to see so many delighted students, obviously thrilled at having their hard work pay off.

“So many students I talked to are now set to go to university and I wish them all the best with their studies and in their next adventures.

“Congratulations to all the schools and college staff who also deserve recognition for this year’s results.”
