Frontline Club
Frontline is a welcome haven from the bustling streets of London's Paddington, with the restaurant inhabiting the ground floor of the three storey Frontline media club that uniquely combines eating, drinking and thinking .
Luckily you don't have to be a member of the club to frequent the restaurant, where Head Chef John Taylor's kitchen uses the freshest ingredients, meticulously sourced from small, independent British producers .
Serving a menu that revisits British classics, with plenty of seasonal variation and signature dishes, Frontline's food is straightforward, unpretentious and reasonably priced .
Amongst the starters expect to find crispy pork with hot Tewkesbury mustard and watercress salad and organic oaksmoked salmon with caviar and crème fraiche .
Frontline Classics include Old Bob's sausage, mash and caramelised onion gravy - the sorts of things you tend to dream about when you're covering wars halfway round the world .
The full-blown main courses include steamed organic salmon, sorrel salad, green herb and caper relish, breast of Label Anglaise chicken, purple sprouting broccoli, with pine nuts and bacon bits and rare breed pork chop with black pudding and glazed apples, mustard sauce .
Triple cooked chips are always available on the side and if you've left any room you can treat yourself to Henry's little pot of 'Rolo' chocolate, with ginger nut biscuits to finish .
This modern British cuisine is matched by a truly global 100-strong wine list sourced by Malcolm Gluck, wine author and creator of Superplonk.com .
Luckily the Frontline operate a remarkable fair pricing policy that adds a flat rate of £10 plus VAT to the cost price of each bottle, rather than the 300% mark-ups seen at some restaurants .
So the better the wine, the better the deal .
